31 days and counting till play time.  Looks like I'll be hunting a hay field.  I hope they mow it before that week.  Anybody ever hunt geese in 12" tall grass???

Any advice?

Curious if this will be worth it.  Every where else I have access to is either in beans or standing corn, so this will be my only space for the early season.

If you have full body decoys you might wat to cut some conduit to stake them above the grass, alfala

Thanks for the advice Craig,

My three year old and I will be working on the rig this weekend getting everything ready and cleaning up the stuff I didn't clean up at the end of the season.  I'll grab some conduit and put something together.

Unfortunately this field is or has not been used by the birds, however about 200 to 300 yards away (on another property) is a pond that is getting used heavily and this field is right in the flight path for 8:00AM fliers heading to the pond (At least that is their current pattern).  I am hopeful that my calling and a couple of GHG full bodies might get a few within 40 yards ... better yet, I'd like 'em in my face.

Monday is opening day on Canada Geese.  I hope to start off the Labor Day Celebration with a bang ... eight bangs to be precise.

The long awaited return of the season is finally here with the Resident Population hunt season.

Well,

We weren't on the X yesterday morning.  I only saw a total of seven flocks which flew by off in the distance.  We were able to pull a small flock of 5 into the decoys though.  Roll Eyes

So Hunting season began with a bang about 7:05 AM eastern standard time.

It was an awesome morning!

After we got the dekes picked up, I found another hay field on the farm next door and aquired permission. This field is right under the main 'morning' flight pattern that I witnessed yesterday.  Hope to set up there Friday evening and Saturday morning coming up.

I've got tropical storm  "Hannah" coming up the coast and it is to come thru central  Maryland Friday night and all day Saturday leaving us a much needed 1 to 3 inches of rain.

I'm definetly going out Friday evening and if work goes well today and tomorrw, I'll be in the field Friday morning as well.  Saturday looks like it will be extremely windy and a wash out.  Only having seen 7 flocks on Monday and the fact that the migrators haven't arrived yet, I am not thrilled at the idea of sitting out in the weather on Saturday.  I would think my fowl friends might not move on Saturday anyway.
