Well, I took my son out last evening for his first goose hunt.  Our early bird season ends today.

We had a blast.  I took off work early and picked him up around 2:00.  My wife (Who is a vegetarian I might add) had him dressed all up in camo, all the way down to his underoos, to which he was proud to show me.

He helped me set out about 3 dozen full bodies.  Then we made a blind along a hedge row.

He was awesome.  I couldn't believe how well he sat there.  About 5:00 I thought, we have been just sitting in here for a while, the birds have been moving around 6:00 lately, maybe we should get out of the blind and move around outside a little so he doesn't get bored.

Well he thought this was a good idea too.  Wouldn't you know it.  We got about 10 yards from the blind and I looked up and there was a flock of about 20 coming over us like a bunch of stealth bombers, not making a sound.  It was too late to do anything.  All we could do was look up at them and wave as they looked down on us.  Unfortunately that was all we saw last evening.

Oh well, we still had a blast, saw 4 deer, watched the farmer drive the tractor out to the pasture with some round hay bales for the cows, picked flowers for mom, blew the goose calls for hours on end (he really likes the Zink power clucker), oh yeah, and I officially became an entomologist, as I was asked to identify every bug known to mankind that we found.

I have to say, this will be one of my finest hunting memories of all time.

I'd encourage you guys, if you have kids, spend some time with them.  You'll only regret it later if you don't.

Mark 9:36-37 (NKJV)

Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them.  And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, "Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me."

Sounds like you had a great time with your son and that is awesome!!! I miss my boys being that young sometimes my youngest will be 15 my oldest will be 20 then I also have a 16 and a 17 year old. None of them are really interested in hunting but I was not into it when they were little like I am now. Thats ok though we still have other stuff to do together, down side is I am usually sore or winded or both by the time we are through. Its all good though.

Last night at dinner, my son asked me, "Why didn't the geese come in Dad?"  It was hard to try to explain to a three year old why they wouldn't land in the decoys while we were standing in the midst of them.  His thought process of going to the park to feed them and literally be swarmed by 10 to 20 trying to get a bite to eat would not allow him to understand the concept of them not feeling comfortable to land in a hay field with 3 dozen decoys in the middle of no where with a Dad and son standing in the middle waiving hello to them.

After trying to explain all this to him he responded, "Well, we could go to the park tonight and get one."

My wife says he's brain washed.  I say he's hooked.

Any advice on how to explain that we can't go to the park to get a goose to take home because Daddy's going to get into trouble? Grin

Have an awesome day fellas.

that is awesome!  my son is 2 and i cant wait for the day that he joins me in the blind.  for the most part of the day we watch the outdoor channel ( i am a stay-at-home dad).  when someone shoots an animal, whether it be deer, duck, goose, turkey, etc., he jumps and down clapping his yelling  "yeaaaaaaaaay!  nice shot, man!"
