Yes this does happen in New Zealand. In my region our Goose season is 3May-30Nov then a Special Season 1Feb-19Apr
and during these seasons you can hunt 24 hours

I had my first taste of night hunting last June we got to a small stock pond which has a braded river running past, about 100 yards away which the geeseUsed as a flyway,
we could hear them calling as they flew down river at night
so trying to call in birds when they?re in the dark is different.
At one end of the pond were some trees which the birds flew over then we could hear their wings as they were dropping into the pond.
This is when it?s FUN as there were 6 shooters and 2 spotlights standing on the side of the pond about 12 feet apart in a line,
when we heard the firstbird land the spotlights go on and then
you all open up,NOW THAT?S FUN I TELL YOU  Grin. The birds would usually fly up and out, well some did. But sometimes a bird would
Fly straight down the spotlight, now they become a flying missile coming straight at you at head height (semi autos are handy) a couple of times birds were shoot only to land at our feet our flying past your head dead Shocked ,this makes for a fun night out
