Went out for a shoot on same corn stubble this afternoon. We we setup for shooting parries and the two of us limited out on them at 10 each plus I got 6 geese and 1 Grey duck so it was a good time all around.   Yesterday we went out in the morning to have a crack at  a mob of 100 geese and all we ended up with was my mate got 2 geese plus 2 parries, I missed out altogether, as for the big mob they went down river and didn’t swing in to our spread, but that’s hunting for you

here are my birds and Wilson after the shoot today.
Hopping to go out and concentrate on the Mallards some time in the next two weeks and also the first weekend of June I'm of for a goose shoot I'll keep you posted as i go
Cheers Russell

Wilson looks like a work aholic.

Congrats on the harvest.  Hope you stayed dry.  Looks really wet out there.

Hey Russell,

Going from left to right, can you name the 3 birds on the left.  I'm not sure what they are.

The three are six in a pile really, my mate had my other four parries in his blind. The black headed birds are the male Paradise Shelduck and the white head is a female Paradise Shelduck, they behave a little like geese but are easy to  decoy .In the photo with the dog the first bird you see that has a strip of white on its head is a young bird from this breeding season.
on the recount when cleaning up the birds there were 7 geese

our tally hanging before the clean up

hope thats as clear as mud for you John

Well they don't have much of a reputation, some people find them a bit strong game wise.
I think they fine myself and manly breast then out and for salamis or home made sausages.
They're probably the second most hunted game bird as they are so easy to hunt, you can go into a paddock and scare them off
then set up and then have them come back some times with in 30 minutes and start shooting. So they are a good game bird to get started on in waterfowl hunting.
  Cheers Russell
PS  as for Wilson's name its based on the volley ball in Castaway ,you know some one you can talk to but never get an answer from

What sound do those Paradise ducks make, any calls for them?

P.S we need to get your some of Buck Gardners seasoning to try on those Paradise Ducks it's dose a wonderful job of removing the game taste and making it taste like steak.... Wink

Well the best way of you understanding the Paradise duck call its to listen to this http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/wetland-birds/5/2
The call I have is lower in tone and is made in NZ, but Haydel's game calls have one but I don't know the model code for it though. It may only be marketed in NZ
The reed on my Hammond call is a thicker plus shorter than a standard mallard call I think, and it needs a good amount of pressured air to get it going

After seeing the photo on Buck's web site he may have shoot a few on his trip down to New Zealand
If buck ever make's a Paradise duck call after his trip I'm sure I'd trial it out for him  Wink                               http://www.buckgardner.com/pics/displayimage.php?album=18&pos=1
