We had a fantastic season here in Southern WI.  We saw more Mallards than we have in years, and as always the Canada Geese showed up for the party just about everytime we set up.  I also retrieved another band this year.  It was on a Mallard.  Found out it was a fairly local bird, I harvested it 10 miles from where it was banded.  I would say thumbs up!

For Canada Geese - which is what I like the most:  Little better than past.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being terrible and 10 phenominal, I''''d rate this past season a 8.9

We had a really strong start to the season. I had a corn field that the first two weeks of the season was the "X" and we did incredibly well.  We would get in, get our limit and get out.

Then we had the split for deer season.

We started back at this same farm after the split and had to scratch to get some geese.  With our scouting, we determined that we needed to pick up and start moving to farms that were in traffic zones.  When we did this we started doing pretty well again.  Then in mid January the temps really plumeted.  All roosting ponds in the areas near our properties got deserted.  All the birds congregated into areas that were just a little away from our properties with little to no flights going over us.  We uped the amount of dekes in the spread, did a lot of flagging and calling, but it got really hard.  I think we had about 3 or 4 outings during this stretch of the season that we batted zero on.

Then the snow and ice started happening, I missed quite a few hunts because of work demands.

Right before the end of the Atlantic Population zone hunt season, we managed to scratch out a few more good outings.

At this point with the goose season closed in my stomping ground, we moved to the Resident Population Zone in Western MD.  We had the pleasure of hunting the X again on a farm that hadn''''t been hunted since the 2009-2010 waterfowl season.  We totalled 31 geese in three outings in a 2 week period.  Then we ran traffic on a farm that was in a prime location, and had a great hunt.  Our next to the last outing was a farm that we hadn''''t been on since november out in western MD.  We got nine in the morning and pulled out to return there another day.  We scratched out one on our next visit there.

I guess that''''s my season in a nutshell. Made a ton of great memories, met some new great people.  Spent some quality time with my son and some of my waterfowling buddies, my brothers and 2 of my nephews.  We got our first ever neck collar, we got a leg band, I got my first ever wood duck, my son''''s first hunt out of a layout blind, my freezer is full, saw some pretty incredible sunrises and sunsets, broke my new gun in pretty well, gas prices about killed me the last three weeks burnin well over 120 bucks a week just for hunting trips.

And how about you?
